Old Cloverdale, Garden District, and Pike Road cluster at the top of the range. Family child care homes across Montgomery and Autauga County typically run $150 to $300 below center prices.
Alabama licensing relaxes ratios at 18 months and again at age two, which typically reduces monthly tuition by $100 to $200. Part-time options are common in Capitol Heights, Wynton Court, and McGehee Place.
Alabama First Class Pre-K is NIEER's top-rated state preschool program, free for eligible four-year-olds. Montgomery Public Schools, Pike Road Schools, and several community partners run First Class classrooms.

Montgomery tuition varies by roughly $325 per month between Old Cloverdale and the more affordable central and west-side corridors. These are the neighborhoods and adjacent River Region suburbs with the most active providers.
Montgomery is the Alabama state capital and anchors the River Region metro of about 390,000. The State of Alabama, Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in Hope Hull, Baptist Health, Jackson Hospital, Alabama State University, and Auburn University at Montgomery together anchor more than 75,000 jobs in the metro core. Demand for infant seats is steady year-round, and the centers in Old Cloverdale, Garden District, and Pike Road run the longest waitlists. The good news: Alabama First Class Pre-K is consistently ranked the highest-quality state pre-K program in the country by NIEER, and Montgomery Public Schools and Pike Road Schools have expanded First Class classrooms aggressively in recent years.
Every legal daycare in Montgomery is licensed by the Alabama Department of Human Resources, Office of Child Care Subsidy and Licensing. Alabama Quality STARS is the state's voluntary quality rating and improvement system, with ratings from 1 to 5 Stars. Every provider in our directory is matched against the Alabama DHR licensing search monthly. Family child care homes serving up to six children must register with DHR; in-home providers serving seven or more must hold a full state license.
Alabama center ratios are 1:5 for infants under 18 months, 1:6 for 18 to 24 months, 1:8 for two-year-olds, 1:12 for three-year-olds, and 1:18 for ages four and five. NAEYC-accredited and Quality STARS 5-Star centers in Old Cloverdale and the Garden District commonly operate well below these ceilings, often closer to 1:3 for infants. Family child care homes are capped at six children, of whom no more than two may be under eighteen months old.
Montgomery Public Schools operates Alabama First Class Pre-K classrooms at more than two dozen elementary campuses, with seats awarded through a state-administered random selection lottery each spring. Pike Road Schools, the fast-growing east-side district carved off from MPS in 2014, runs its own First Class lottery and has expanded preschool seats every year since opening. Autauga County Schools across the Alabama River in Prattville runs a similar First Class network. The Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education runs a single statewide application portal each January through March that families can use to apply across districts and community partners.
Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Annex, the home of Air University, operate Child Development Centers and a Family Child Care program for active-duty and DOD-civilian families, and accept Air Force Child Care Fee Assistance at several off-base partners. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in Hope Hull, the largest private employer in the metro, offers a back-up care benefit and Dependent Care FSA enrollment for production-shift families. Baptist Health and Jackson Hospital partner with several Montgomery daycares for reserved seats and shift-friendly hours. State of Alabama employees can use Dependent Care FSA payroll deductions through the State Employees' Insurance Board. Families working downtown or near the medical district should ask about employer-partner enrollment priority before joining a public waitlist.
Alabama's Child Care Subsidy Program (CCSP) maintains a statewide waiting list when caseload exceeds budget, with priority for protective service, TANF, and transitional families. Montgomery County CCSP reimbursement rates for infants in a Quality STARS 4-Star or 5-Star center are tied to the 75th percentile of regional market rates, which generally covers most of tuition at participating providers; copays are calculated on a sliding scale capped at 7 percent of household income under federal CCDF rules.
Alabama's Child Care Subsidy Program covers most of the tuition bill for working families earning up to 130 percent of the federal poverty level at participating Montgomery providers. Alabama First Class Pre-K runs free preschool seats for eligible four-year-olds. Active-duty Air Force families at Maxwell-Gunter can apply for Child Care Fee Assistance. All families can use the federal Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit and a Dependent Care FSA. Our tax credit explainer walks through the math, and our Alabama First Class Pre-K explainer covers the state's flagship program.
