Fayetteville's neighborhoods run on different price curves. These are the areas with the densest provider coverage in our directory.
Fayetteville holds roughly 220 licensed providers serving 209,000 city residents and another 125,000 across the rest of Cumberland County, according to the NC Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Division of Child Development and Early Education (DCDEE) 2025 licensed facility roster. Tuition runs well below the national average and roughly 25 to 35 percent below the Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte metros. The US Department of Labor National Database of Childcare Prices places Cumberland County in the lower-cost tier nationally. Haymount, Westover, and the Cross Creek corridor hold the top of the market with five-star rated centers and a handful of NAEYC-accredited programs. Murchison Road, Massey Hill, and Eutaw Village hold the densest licensed family home and small in-home child care supply at the bottom of the price range. Many Fayetteville families combine paid infant and toddler care with the free NC Pre-K program once their child turns four. Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) is the largest single employer in the region, and the on-post Child Development Centers (CDCs) are widely used by active-duty military families paying on the DoD income-based sliding scale.
North Carolina requires a 1:5 infant ratio for children under 12 months, 1:6 for ages 12 to 23 months, 1:10 for two-year-olds, 1:15 for three-year-olds, 1:20 for four-year-olds, and 1:25 for school-age children in licensed child care centers under 10A NCAC 09. Every legal daycare in Fayetteville appears in the public DCDEE child care facility search, with inspection history and any compliance findings visible. The NC Star Rated License system, administered by DCDEE, assigns one to five stars based on program standards (compliance history and the higher of staff education or program standards). Five-star programs meet the highest combined thresholds and are the only programs eligible for NC Pre-K and the higher subsidy reimbursement tiers. Every provider in our directory is cross-checked against the DCDEE database monthly.
Working Cumberland County families earning under 200 percent of the federal poverty level may qualify for the NC Subsidized Child Care Assistance program, administered through Cumberland County Department of Social Services and the NC DCDEE. NC Pre-K runs free school-day preschool for income-eligible four-year-olds at more than 35 Cumberland County sites through the Partnership for Children of Cumberland County and Cumberland County Schools. Federal Head Start operates alongside NC Pre-K at several of those sites through the Cumberland County Community Action Program. Active-duty service members stationed at Fort Liberty pay on the Department of Defense sliding scale at on-post CDCs, and the Army Fee Assistance program offsets off-post costs for eligible families. All families regardless of income can use the federal Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit, the NC Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit, and a Dependent Care FSA. Our tax credit explainer walks through the math at common Fayetteville income levels.
